Housing Needs Assessments

What is a "Housing Needs Assessment"?

Typically, housing needs assessments are utilized by local entities such as government, economic development, chamber of commerce, and social service organizations as well as private developers and non-profit groups to identify housing issues and provide solutions through analysis. This assessment provides the foundation for future housing initiatives, policy decisions, special needs development projects (e.g., homeless, disabled, etc.) and secure financing for these important housing projects.

What data do you incorporate into this assessment?

Our assessment compiles specific demographic data, economic characteristics and trends, current housing inventory and characteristics, government policies’ and incentives, and community services’ availability and adequacy. We incorporate stakeholders and resident interviews to provide insight related to housing challenges perceived by the community.

Who would need this assessment?

The analysis quantifies housing units needed in the market by tenure (rental vs. for-sale), price point, bedroom type, and market segment (e.g., families, seniors, disabled, young professionals, etc.). We recommend how to achieve housing goals utilizing this data, local market initiatives, and our experience. Our data can be curated to meet your community’s specific needs, such as community land that can be optimized for new housing developments, adaptive reuse of existing structures, submarket analysis, or other site-specific needs. We can customize your project to meet your needs.

When can I anticipate the delivery of our project?

Due to this type of assessment’s in-depth nature, the time this takes varies, but the average is 4-6 months. For example, we did the state of Texas, which took 18 months. We aim to keep the client engaged during this process and are always available to provide your project’s status.
